Garden project makes home in McKernan

You may have noticed a garden plot bursting with plants that popped up this summer on a vacant lot on University Ave between 110 and 111 Streets. A neat sign boasts ‘Fresh Veggies’ and directions on how to order from Veg in Yeg (

This plot is the newest location for an urban farming project that had its beginnings in Garneau in 2014. Now run by Nicole, a hard-working graduate student originally from Manchester, U.K., the garden offers a wide variety of fresh vegetables under a pay-what-you-can model — and shows bright ideas for bringing local food to communities.

If you have any resources (time, money, freezer space, non-profit advice?) to offer the project, check out; email or call (780) 914 8889. Learn more in the September issue of the Messenger!
