Garden project makes home in McKernan

You may have noticed a garden plot bursting with plants that popped up this summer on a vacant lot on University Ave between 110 and 111 Streets. A neat sign boasts ‘Fresh Veggies’ and directions on how to order from Veg in Yeg (veginyeg.ca).

This plot is the newest location for an urban farming project that had its beginnings in Garneau in 2014. Now run by Nicole, a hard-working graduate student originally from Manchester, U.K., the garden offers a wide variety of fresh vegetables under a pay-what-you-can model — and shows bright ideas for bringing local food to communities.

If you have any resources (time, money, freezer space, non-profit advice?) to offer the project, check out veginyeg.ca; email hello@veginyeg.ca or call (780) 914 8889. Learn more in the September issue of the Messenger!
